UGA Baseball: No. 2 Georgia Hits The Road For Next Five Games

ATHENS—–Second-ranked Georgia begins a five-game road swing Tuesday against Georgia Southern at SRP Park in North Augusta, S.C. First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m., and the Bulldogs will be the home team.

The teams were scheduled to play there last Wednesday, but the game was postponed due to rain. Then, the Bulldogs will face the Eagles (9-5) in Statesboro on Wednesday at 6 p.m. (ESPN+) and open up Southeastern Conference action at top-ranked Florida (16-0) starting Friday.

At 14-2, the Bulldogs are off to another hot start. Last year after week one in the SEC, the Bulldogs had roared out to a 19-2 mark including sweeping No. 22 South Carolina in Columbia. After going 3-1 last week, Georgia moved up to No. 2 in the USA Today Coaches Top 25 poll and to No. 3 in Baseball America and D1Baseball.com top 25 rankings. Georgia was ranked as high as No. 2 last April in the USA Today Coaches poll and by D1Baseball.com.

UGA Men’s Basketball: Cole Named Georgia’s SEC Legend

ATHENS, Ga. — Rod Cole, who helped lead the Georgia to the 1990 SEC Championship 30 seasons ago, has been selected as the Bulldogs’ 2020 SEC Legend. The 14 Allstate SEC Basketball Legends from each league school will be honored at this week’s league tournament at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

Cole, a native of Conyers, Ga., was a standout at Rockdale County High School before joining the Bulldogs. He was a four-year starter at Georgia from 1987-91 and finished his career ranked No. 2 in assists (379) and No. 5 in steals (191) among the Bulldogs’ all-time statistical leaders. Cole helped lead Georgia to its first-ever back-to-back NCAA Tournament bids in 1990 and 1991 and served as team captain as a senior.

Cole was a key component in Georgia’s run to the 1990 SEC title. The Bulldogs started league play 3-3 that season but then won nine of their next 10 games en route to the title. Cole helped start that streak by hitting three free throws with four seconds left to force overtime in the Bulldogs’ 94-92 upset of the 16th-ranked LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge.

This season marks the 22nd year of the SEC Basketball Legends program. Previous legends for the Bulldogs include: Vern Flemin (1999), Alec Kessler (2000), Zippy Morocco (2001), Dominique Wilkins (2002), James Banks (2003), Lavon Mercer (2004), Ronnie Hogue (2005), Joe Ward (2006), Litterial Green (2007), Hugh Durham (2008), Shandon Anderson (2009), Tom Brennan (2010), Walter Daniels (2011), Willie Anderson (2012), Tim Bassett (2013), D.A. Layne (2014), Jacky Dorsey (2015), Jarvis Hayes (2016), Jimmy Pitts (2017), Chad Kessler (2018) and Jumaine Jones (2019).

ATHENS, Ga. – Third-ranked Georgia completed a series sweep of Massachusetts Sunday, winning 6-0 at Foley Field.

The Bulldogs improved to 14-2, notching their fourth shutout including second over the Minutemen. Georgia senior right-hander Logan Moody was making his first start of the year and tied his career high by going five scoreless innings for his first win this season. Justin Glover, Will Childers and Tucker Bradley combined to pitch the final four frames, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts.

The Minutemen (1-8) threatened in the first, loading the bases with two outs, and then Moody retired first baseman Steve Luttazi. In the fourth, UMASS got a leadoff triple from Anthony Videtto, and Moody and the Bulldogs took care of the next three hitters to maintain the shutout. UMASS put the first two on to start the sixth against Glover, and then he came back to get a strikeout, and the Bulldogs turned a double play.

ATHENS, Ga. – The Georgia Bulldogs clinched the series over the South Carolina Gamecocks with an 11-3 run-rule victory in five innings of play on Sunday afternoon at Jack Turner Stadium.

Junior Lauren Mathis (7-0) was granted the start in the circle for the Bulldogs (22-5, 2-1), her first appearance in the series. Mathis worked three innings, striking out four, walking one and allowing three runs on three hits. Senior Mary Wilson Avant entered in relief for the second game in the row. Avant pitched two innings, recording two strikeouts and allowed one hit but no runs.
