UGA Football: Red And Black Tie In Exciting G-Day Game

ATHENS, Ga. — With pride and intra-squad bragging rights on the line, the Georgia football team’s Red and Black squads played a back-and-forth, entertaining G-Day Game to wrap up spring practice Saturday afternoon at Sanford Stadium

Balls were flying all over Dooley Field as both teams passed often, particularly in the first half and the fourth quarter, leading to some big completions and key defensive stops. Late in the game, quarterback Carson Beck led the Red squad 70 yards for a game-tying touchdown with 27 seconds remaining. In the end, the scrimmage ended in a 20-20 tie after Liam Badger’s 54-yard field-goal attempt as time expired came up just short for the Black squad.

The Red offense led by Beck amassed 390 yards of offense, while the Black gained 264. With the first-team offense (Red) going against the first-team defense (Black), and the respective second units also going against one another, the Bulldogs’ present and future were on display. It was the first action in a Georgia uniform for several offseason transfers, many of whom made an immediate impact.

UGA Football: Georgia Officially Announces the Hiring of James Coley and Josh Crawford to the Coaching Staff to Replace Dell McGee and Bryan McClendon

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia football is adding James Coley as wide receivers coach and Josh Crawford as run game coordinator/running backs coach, according to an announcement from head coach Kirby Smart Monday.

Coley is replacing Bryan McClendon, who is now the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers coach, and Crawford is filling the spot vacated by Dell McGee, who is Georgia State’s new head coach.

“We are excited to have Coley and his family back in Athens,” Smart said.  “He is a tremendous teacher and leader of young men. His previous experience on our staff will make this a seamless transition. As for Josh, I’ve had the pleasure of observing his career unfold over the years and have been consistently impressed. His hard work and the significant impact he’s had coaching football in our state have earned him this opportunity.”

Prior to accepting a similar position with South Carolina in January 2024, Coley was hired in 2020 as the Texas A&M tight ends coach.  He was named the Aggies’ co-offensive coordinator in 2022 and also worked with receivers while in College Station.

“Better Never Rests”

Kirby Smart is in his eighth year directing the Bulldogs who are 93-16 in this span including back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. This offseason, Georgia took a deep dive on the New Zealand All Blacks, the world’s most successful rugby team, or quite frankly, any sports team in history.

Most Consecutive Weeks At No. 1

This season, Georgia established an SEC record for Most Consecutive Weeks at No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Bulldogs spent 24 weeks at No. 1 and this ranked second all-time in the College Football Playoff era.

33 Southern California, 12/8/03 to 12/4/05
24 GEORGIA, 10/9/22 – 11/26/23

Most Wins By Bulldog Senior Class

The Bulldog senior class has a chance to collect its record 50th win in the Capital One Orange Bowl.

Also, these Bulldogs went 22-0 at home.

T1. 49-4 (2023); 49-5 (2022)

WIN: What’s Important Now

Sixth-ranked Georgia (12-1) is making its 27th consecutive bowl appearance, which is the nation’s longest streak and dates to 1997. The Bulldogs will face fifth-ranked Florida State (13-0) in the Capital One Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla. This will be Georgia’s 62nd bowl game (second most of any team in the country), and the Bulldogs are looking to win their seventh consecutive bowl game. Georgia’s all-time record in bowls is 37-21-3. Also, the 2023 Georgia senior class has tied the school mark for victories with a 49-4 record. The 2022 class went 49-5.

The Bulldogs hold a 6-4-1 advantage in the series with FSU who enters the bowl game on a 19-game winning streak (second-longest active streak in the FBS). These teams last met in the 2003 Sugar Bowl when Georgia picked up a 26-13 victory in New Orleans to finish 13-1 and No. 3 in the final polls. This will be the Bulldogs’ fifth appearance in the Capital One Orange Bowl where they are 3-1. Georgia won its last appearance here, a 34-11 rout of No. 2 Michigan in a 2021 College Football Playoff semifinal. The victory over UM started a school record 29-game winning streak. This year, Georgia completed its third straight undefeated regular season to become the first program to do that in the Associated Press poll era that began in 1936.

Balance Signals Success

The Bulldogs are one of only two teams in the country who are ranked in the top 10 in both Scoring Offense and Scoring Defense. The Bulldogs rank ninth in Scoring Defense at 16.6 ppg and ninth in Scoring Offense at 38.4 ppg. The other team is Notre Dame as they are eighth in both categories (16.6 ppg/39.1 ppg.). Meanwhile, FSU is sixth in Scoring Defense (15.9) and 13th in Scoring Offense (37.0).

One of the keys to Georgia’s success is its third down defense. The Bulldogs lead the country with opponents converting just 26 percent of the time. In SEC action, Georgia opponents were a combined 28-for-95 on t h ird downs (29 percent). The Bulldogs are second nationally in converting third downs (55 percent).

Bulldogs Again Among The Leaders In Scoring Defense

Since the arrival of Kirby Smart in 2016, the Bulldogs have featured talented defenses and twice led the nation in Scoring Defense. This season, Georgia is ranked ninth nationally allowing 16.6 points/game.
