In the fourth game of the Georgia men’s basketball team’s season, Tuesday night against Montana at Stegeman Coliseum, we got to see these Bulldogs continue to evolve as a unit. With eight new players on this year’s team, the Bulldogs will continue to take shape as the season progresses.
What we saw Tuesday, in Georgia’s 63-50 win over the Grizzlies, was a team with depth and muscle and speed. The Bulldogs made 10 of their first 12 shots and jumped out to a nice lead, 21-7, but the rest of the night was more of a struggle from the floor.
Despite the shooting difficulties — Georgia (4-0) finished 27 of 68 from the floor and 5 of 23 from 3-point range — the Bulldogs kept pushing and persisting at both ends of the floor. The game was, in coach Tom Crean‘s words, “the definition of a grinder.”

ATHENS, Ga. – Led by a pair of double-doubles, the University of Georgia men’s basketball team opened its 2020-21 season with an 85-75 over Florida A&M Sunday afternoon before 1,638 spectators at Stegeman Coliseum. The Bulldogs (1-0) were able to pull away late from the Rattlers (0-2) on the strength of 58 percent shooting in the second half, as well as a stout showing from their bench.
Stony Brook transfer Andrew Garcia led all scorers with 22 points on 6-of-8 shooting, along with four rebounds and two steals. Junior Tye Fagan posted a career-high 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting, picking up his first career double-double with a team-best 10 rebounds.
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia will take part in the Global Sports Invitational during the 2020-21 basketball season, with the Bulldogs serving as “host” for the multi-team event (MTE) that will also feature Charleston Southern, SMU and Wofford.
Georgia will entertain Wofford and Charleston Southern at Stegeman Coliseum on Monday, Nov. 16 and Sunday, Nov. 22, respectively, and round out the tourney with a trip to SMU on Wed. Nov. 25. The Bulldogs’ trip to SMU will complete a home-and-home series with the Mustangs. A complete schedule for the round-robin event is listed below.
All three of Georgia’s games will have “homecoming” implications. Wofford head coach Jay McAuley was a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs from 2003-06. Charleston Southern senior Phlandrous “Phlan” Fleming, Jr., is an Athens native who starred at Cedar Shoals High School. Georgia sophomores Sahvir Wheeler and Tyron McMillan played high school basketball in Texas.
ATHENS, Ga. — Steve McClain has joined the Georgia Basketball staff as an assistant coach, head coach Tom Crean announced on Tuesday. McClain, who has spent the past five seasons as head coach at University of Illinois Chicago, was a member of Crean’s coaching staff at Indiana from 2010-15.
“We are really excited to add Steve McClain to our Georgia Basketball family and the University of Georgia community,” Crean said. “We have known each other over 30 years, and he was a huge part of what we did at Indiana during some great times. Steve was a part of a Big Ten Championship, three NCAA Tournaments and two Sweet 16s before he left to become the head coach at Illinois Chicago.
“Steve is beyond tireless and driven for excellence,” Crean continued. “He has such a strong basketball mind, intensity, determination and genuine care for his players as people first. He finished within a few points of winning the Horizon League Championship in March, and it was a lot of fun to watch them get healthy and get better. The last four years at Illinois Chicago were the best four years of cumulative success since the early ’90s. Steve gets it.
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia’s Stegeman Coliseum was listed at No. 21 in the 2020 arena rankings of NCAA Division I basketball venues by Stadium Journey. The website reviewed 334 of 353 NCAA Division I arenas and then compiled its rankings utilizing a “fanfare” system, which took into account a facility’s food, atmosphere, neighborhood, fans, access, value and more.
“This is easily the largest rankings list ever undertaken here at Stadium Journey, and we would wager anyplace else,” the website wrote. “It’s a different way of looking at venues, and produces some variability in our lists that you don’t see elsewhere.”
