UGA Men’s Basketball: Head Coach Mike White Speaks With the Media After the Big Upset Over Auburn

ATLANTA, Ga. – In a dominant performance, the University of Georgia men’s basketball team defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 77-62 in the final game of the Holiday Hoopsgiving tournament on Sunday evening before 3,087 spectators at State Farm Arena.
Fifth-year Braelen Bridges led Georgia (8-3) in scoring with 18 points, shooting a perfect 9-for-9 from the field, while junior Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe tallied a season-high 15 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting. Junior Jabri Abdur-Rahim pitched in with a 12-point, career-high 11-rebound double-double and senior Terry Roberts posted 10 points and five assists. For the evening, the Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the field and outscored the Irish 40-22 in the paint.
ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia Bulldogs (5-2) men’s basketball team used timely scoring runs, great passing and set multiple season-highs to earn a double-digit win over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers (3-4), 62-47, on Sunday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum.
UGA had a season-best 15 assists on 26 made shots, while also recording its season low in turnovers with 14. Terry Roberts had a team-high six dimes, also adding 12 points, six rebounds and four steals. The Bulldogs also made a season-best nine three-pointers from five different players, led by Kario Oquendo with 16 points on an efficient 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Georgia Bulldogs were unable to overcome an impressive second half from the UAB Blazers Tuesday night at the Ocean Center, falling in the championship game of the Greenlight Sunshine Slam by an 87-73 score.
Justin Hill led the Bulldogs in scoring for the fourth time this season, finishing with 17 points and four rebounds. Braelen Bridges added a season-best 10 points and seven boards, while Kario Oquendo had 12 points of his own. The production off the bench was again a bright spot for UGA, providing 36 points, highlighted by Bridges and Hill. The Blazers’ Jordan “Jelly” Walker led all scorers with 30 points while shooting 50% from the field.
“We were decent defensively in the first half, but I think in the second half it was more about UAB’s offensive output,” said head coach Mike White. “They got it going. We missed a couple of layups, missed a couple of open ones. They went on a run to build a seven-point lead, and the game was just different from then on.”
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Georgia Bulldogs created enough separation in the first half to fend off the Saint Joseph’s Hawks’ comeback attempts in the second, winning the game 66-53 on Monday evening at the Ocean Center and advancing to the championship of the Greenlight Sunshine Slam.
Georgia’s bench impressed, putting up 29 of its 66 points. In total, the Bulldogs had four players scoring in double figures, led by Kario Oquendo with 15 points going 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Jabri Abdur-Rahim, Justin Hill and Terry Roberts all added 12 points of their own, with Abdur-Rahim and Hill playing just 16 and 18 minutes, respectively.
Georgia’s championship game in the Sunshine Slam is tomorrow against UAB at 4 p.m. ET and will be televised on the CBS Sports Network. This will mark the first game between the Bulldogs and the Blazers since December 3, 2010, in which Georgia won 66-64. UGA holds a 3-1 record against UAB all-time.
ATHENS, Ga. — Freshman KyeRon Lindsay recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Georgia Bulldogs’ 77-70 victory over the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks at Stegeman Coliseum on Monday evening, notching his first collegiate double-double and becoming the third Southeastern Conference freshman this season to achieve the mark.
Terry Roberts paced Georgia (2-1) offensively with 22 points, adding four rebounds and three assists. Justin Hill added 12 points for the Bulldogs in just 18 minutes off the bench. Miami’s (1-2) Mekhi Lairy led the game in scoring with 34, making all 10 of his free throws and going 9-of-17 from the field.
“It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take the win instead of the alternative,” said head coach Mike White. “Obviously, it beats the alternative. We have a lot to learn and a lot of room for growth. I thought at times, especially in the first 10 or 12 minutes of the game or so, we were playing pretty good basketball. Adversity hit, and we didn’t handle it really well. Credit to Miami of Ohio, Travis [Steele], and his staff. I thought those guys executed well.”

ATHENS, Ga. — After transfer Frank Anslem scored the first points of the Mike White era against the Western Carolina Catamounts (0-1), the Georgia Bulldogs (1-0) never surrendered their lead for the remainder of the game, winning their season opener 68-55 on Monday evening at Stegeman Coliseum.
Junior Kario Oquendo guided the team filled with newcomers, appearing to be in midseason form as he led the team with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting including a pair of three-pointers and three blocks. Anslem added 11 points and four rebounds in his first official outing as a Bulldog.
“Feels good to get a win with the Dawgs,” said Coach White. “I am happy for all of the newcomers to this program, there’s a bunch, most of our locker room of course, and that goes all the way down to our staff, our support staff. Portal guys, freshmen, walk-ons, but probably most importantly, I am happy for those guys that decided to come back this year. We have put forth a lot of effort this fall and found a way to grind one out.”
