Opening Tip

  • Georgia hits the road for the first time this season with a trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the 2021 Daytona Beach Invitational. The 4-0 Lady Bulldogs meet Notre Dame and Marquette — two teams with a combined 8-1 record this year.
  • This week’s games will be carried via a subscription-based livestream on FloHoops.com. Kaleb Frady will handle play-by-play duties on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.
  • Friday’s contest against Notre Dame is just the fourth all-time matchup and the first in 21 years between the Lady Bulldogs and Fighting Irish. Georgia owns a 2-1 lead in the series, with the only loss coming in a 75-73 defeat at the Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge in Madison, Wisc., on Nov. 24, 2000. Georgia legends Kelly and Coco Miller combined for 29 points in the loss.
  • The Lady Bulldogs are 4-0 for the second-straight season and for the third time overall under head coach Joni Taylor. Georgia has won 12 of its last 15 games, with the only losses coming to Kentucky, South Carolina and Oregon.
  • Georgia’s defense has been stifling this season. The Lady Bulldogs lead the SEC in scoring defense at 45.3 ppg and field-goal percentage defense at 26.2 percent.
  • The Lady Bulldogs set a new school record with 18 blocks in the win against Alabama State. That total broke a 34-year old record from 1987, when Georgia had 16 against Mercer. The Lady Bulldogs’ 18 swats are tied for the second-most in a game in SEC history.
  • Freshman guard Reigan Richardson is coming off the best game of her career. She scored 16 points, with 11 of those coming in the second half, against Alabama State.
  • Sophomore forward Javyn Nicholson already has a pair of double-doubles this year after posting two double-doubles in the previous two years combined. Nicholson is averaging 11.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.

Dogs Atop The Polls

For a school record seventh straight week, Georgia is the unanimous No. 1 team in the AP and Coaches polls. This seven-week stretch of being the unanimous No. 1 in the AP poll matches Alabama’s run during the 2018 season for the longest ever going back to 1936. Currently, Georgia is ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff poll. The fourth 2021 CFP ranking will be released on Tuesday. Georgia is 4-0 versus ranked teams, including a pair of top-10 wins. The Bulldogs are the only team in the nation with eight wins versus opponents that have a winning record.

Aiming For An Elite Finish

This is the first time since 1982 that the Bulldogs are 11-0. Georgia looks to become only the fourth team in school history to finish a regular season undefeated and untied with double-digit victories and then play for a national title (1946, 1980, 1982). Vince Dooley’s 1980 consensus national champions was the last Georgia squad to go 12-0 after defeating Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Incidentally, the school record for wins in a season is 13, and that’s been done twice (2002 under Mark Richt and 2017 under Kirby Smart).

Rivalry Rumblings
  • Georgia leads the series 68-39-5 and doesn’t count two Georgia Tech wins during WWII (1943-44) when the Yellow Jackets utilized players from a naval officer’s training program hosted on campus. The Bulldogs have won the past 10 meetings in Atlanta dating back to 2001 and the last three in a row in the series. The teams did not play in 2020 as the SEC played a 10-game league-only slate due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Since 1995, the winner of the Georgia-Georgia Tech game has been awarded the Governor’s Cup Trophy. Since then, the Bulldogs are 19-6 in that stretch.
  • The Georgia-Georgia Tech series is one of the nation’s oldest. There are only 13 other FBS rivalries that have been played more with Minnesota-Wisconsin at the top with 130 games and Georgia-Auburn tied for second now with 126. UW meets UM Saturday in Minneapolis, and the Badgers have a slight series lead at 62-60-8.
  • From 1917-24, Georgia and Georgia Tech did not play each other because of a dispute caused by a Georgia parade float that ridiculed Tech for playing football during World War I.
  • Georgia Tech’s 51-48 win in overtime in 1999 in Atlanta on ABC was the highest-scoring game in the series and featured 1,102 total yards of offense. In overtime, Georgia blocked the Yellow Jackets’ first field goal attempt on third down and the Jackets recovered it. Then, Luke Manget kicked a 38-yarder on the mulligan for the win.
  • In 1978, Georgia trailed 20-0 in the 2nd quarter when freshman Buck Belue came off the sideline and rallied the team to a 29-28 win, the biggest comeback in school history to that point.
  • Georgia closed out the 2002 regular season in Athens with a 51-7 thrashing of Georgia Tech on CBS. It was the most points ever for a Bulldog squad against the Yellow Jackets.

UGA Football: Nakobe Dean Tabbed Butkus Award Finalist

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia junior linebacker Nakobe Dean has been named one of six finalists for the 2021 Butkus Award given to the nation’s best collegiate linebacker, according to an announcement by the Butkus Foundation.

Dean, a native of Horn Lake, Miss., is one of two finalists from the Southeastern Conference for the 37th awarding of the honor.  The winner will be announced on or before Dec. 7.

While Dean was a semifinalist for the collegiate award in 2020 and the winner of the high school Butkus Award in 2018, former Bulldog and current Tennessee Titan Monty Rice was a Butkus Award finalist in 2020.  In addition, former Bulldog and current Chicago Bear Roquan Smith won the 2017 collegiate Butkus Award.

Dean is the second-leading tackler for the No. 1 Bulldogs this season with 50 stops, including a team-leading seven tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.  Starting all 11 games this season as the middle of Georgia’s top-ranked defense, he has also forced a fumble, has two interceptions, including a 50-yard pick-six versus Florida, and three pass break-ups.  Dean is also a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award and Wuerffel Trophy and has been named to the 2021 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

The Bulldogs (11-0, 8-0 SEC) travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech (3-8, 2-6 ACC) on Saturday.  ABC will televise the matchup at noon.

UGA Football: Davis, Seniors Have Their Day

By John Frierson
Staff Writer

Saturday began and ended with Jordan Davis, the larger-than-life Georgia football star whose size and talent are only exceeded by his heart, humanity and personality.

During the pregame Senior Day festivities on Dooley Field, when all 30 of Georgia’s seniors were recognized before the top-ranked Bulldogs’ 56-7 trouncing of Charleston Southern, the loudest roar came at the end, when big No. 99 was introduced.

For those of us who know just how much his time as a Bulldog has meant to Davis, it was a goosebump moment.

Later, when the 6-foot-6 and 340-pound nose tackle lined up in the backfield and scored on a 1-yard run for the game’s first touchdown, the goosebumps returned. Davis and fellow nose tackle Jalen Carter have been blockers in Georgia’s goal line “jumbo” package several times this season, but this time it was Davis’ chance to get in the end zone.

UGA Football: No. 1 Georgia Postgame Notes vs. Charleston Southern

Going 11-0: With today’s 56-7 victory, top-ranked Georgia improves to 11-0 for the first time since 1982 when it finished the regular season 11-0. Also, the 1980 consensus national champion Bulldogs finished 11-0 during the regular season and then won the Sugar Bowl to cap a 12-0 run. The 1946 Bulldogs posted an 11-0 mark after going 10-0 in the regular season and then claiming the Sugar Bowl. There have been nine other teams to register at least 11 wins in a season in school history (1942; 1971; 2002; 2003; 2007; 2012; 2017; 2018 and 2019).

Georgia owns the nation’s longest active winning streak in the FBS as it improves to 15 games. This is tied for second longest in school history as the Bulldogs also won 15 straight contests from 1941-42 and 1979-81. The school record is 17 games set during a three-year stretch from 1945-47.
