UGA Football: Kirby Smart Talks Jordan Davis, JT Daniels, and Stetson Bennett at SEC Weekly Teleconference

University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart met with media on the Southeastern Conference’s weekly teleconference call while James Cook and Kearis Jackson offered post-practice comments.

Head Coach Kirby Smart
Opening Statement…
“We are excited to head down to Jacksonville, Fla. for our traditional rivalry in the Georgia-Florida game. Our kids are excited forward to the opportunity. They enjoy playing in this environment. It’s one of a kind in college football. Our guys are looking forward to the challenge of playing a really talented Florida football team.”

On Jordan Davis…
“He’s having a good season. He’s had some games where we’ve had leads and he hasn’t been able to play and have as much production as he would like to have, but he has been really active when he has played. He has been very productive in terms of the things we ask him to do when he has played. He hasn’t played a ton of snaps because of some of the games we have had. He’s a tough guy on the run. He’s hard to move. He’s athletic for his size.”

Dogs Atop The Polls

For the third straight week, Georgia is ranked No. 1 in the AP/Coaches polls. This marks the first time since the 2008 preseason that the Bulldogs have carried the top ranking in both polls. During the 1982 regular season, the Bulldogs were ranked No. 1 for five straight weeks. The last time Georgia was No. 1 in the College Football Playoff poll was for two weeks during the 2017 season (Oct. 31, Nov. 7). The first 2021 CFP ranking will be released on Nov. 2.

Series History Vs. Florida

This is the first time since 2017 that Georgia-Florida will not be a top-10 matchup. The Bulldogs went 2-1 in that stretch. In the all-time series, Georgia holds a 53-44-2 advantage including 46-42-1 in Jacksonville. The annual rivalry will stay in Jacksonville until at least 2023. Florida has the series 52-44-2 in favor of Georgia because it does not count the Dogs’ 52-0 victory in 1904 that was played in Macon. Bulldog coach Kirby Smart is 3-2 against the Gators.

Dominating Defense & Offense Delivering Points

Georgia leads the nation in Scoring Defense giving up just 6.6 points per game. The Bulldogs are averaging 38.4 points/game, which is ranked 13th nationally. Georgia is 4-0 versus ranked teams, including a pair of top-10 wins.

The defense has allowed just four touchdowns. The first came in the fourth quarter versus USC with the Bulldogs leading 40-6. The second came at No. 18 AU with Georgia leading 24-3. UAB’s touchdown came on a pick-six. Most recently, No. 11 Kentucky had two scores, including the final one with :04 left.

Georgia leads the SEC and ranks fifth nationally in Red Zone defense. Opponents have advanced to the Red Zone only 11 times this season resulting in three touchdowns, four field goals and four times coming away with no points.

Georgia opponents have scored just 46 points in 2021. That seven-game tally is the lowest since 1971 when the Bulldogs had allowed the same total through seven contests.

The Bulldogs lead the country in Total Defense, giving up just 208.4 yards/game. In their last game, the Bulldogs held No. 11 Kentucky to 243 yards, including just 51 on the ground. The Wildcats came in averaging 214 yards rushing, including the SEC rushing leader in Chris Rodriguez Jr., who was held to seven yards on seven carries.

On The Mend

The open date provided another week for numerous Bulldogs who have missed time this year to get healthier. QB JT Daniels has not played since the Vanderbilt game on Sept. 26. Defensive backs Christopher Smith (missed last game) and Ameer Speed (missed last two games), running back Kenny McIntosh (missed last game) and receivers Arian Smith (missed last five games), Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint (missed the Arkansas/Auburn games, played sparingly versus Kentucky) and Jermaine Burton (missed the Auburn game, played sparingly versus Kentucky) have missed time while veteran receivers George Pickens and Dominick Blaylock have yet to play this year.

2020 Flashback

Georgia built an early 14-0 lead including Zamir White scampering 75 yards for a TD on the game’s first play from scrimmage. Then, the Gators used an aerial assault by Kyle Trask and a 24-point outburst in the second quarter to build a 38-21 advantage by halftime. Georgia was missing three defensive starters due to injury (NT Jordan Davis, DT Julian Rochester, S Richard LeCounte) and then starting FS Lewis Cine was ejected for targeting in the second quarter. Trask’s 474 passing yards ranked as the second most ever by a Bulldog opponent, trailing only Jared Lorenzen of Kentucky (528, 2000). Overall, Florida ran 80 plays and finished with 571 yards of total offense. The Gator running backs combined for 10 receptions and 212 receiving yards. The second half featured a Georgia score while Florida was limited to two field goals for a 44-28 final.

GA-FLA Hall Of Fame

Former Bulldog linebacker Thomas Davis (2002-04 UGA, 2005-20 NFL) and offensive lineman Jon Stinchcomb (1999-02 UGA, 2003-10 NFL) will be inducted into the Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame during ceremonies and a luncheon on Friday as part of the Georgia-Florida Weekend.

UGA Football: Coach Smart and The No.1 Bulldogs Gear Up For The Gators

ATHENS, Ga. — University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart, along with a pair of defensive players previewed Saturday’s SEC matchup against Florida. The Bulldogs and the GAtors kick-off at 3:30 p.m. ET in Jacksonville, Fla. at TIAA Stadium.

On Tuesday, Coach Smart, senior Latavious Brini and junior Travon Walker offered the following comments.

Head Coach Kirby Smart

On Jordan Davis’ impact…
“It’s very impactful. I guess that doesn’t help the description. I mean, he is valuable. And I think when you talk about running the ball in the league we’re in you have to be able to have some sort of run game. You don’t have to be dominant in the run game. You got to be able to run the ball and he makes us have more third and seven to twelves than we have third and two to fours. And just statistically when you have third and two to four which we had an inordinate amount against Kentucky and struggled some because they did a nice job on second long, it affects the game and when you have third and seven to ten, it helps you. Jordan is a heavy impact on that because it’s tough to run him. It’s tough to run the ball when he’s in there.  I think what he’s done, he’s made himself quicker, more agile, and his weight fluctuates from time to time, but he’s much more effective when he’s under 350. And he’s taken it upon himself here lately to really work to be under 350. And I noticeably can tell a difference in him when he’s 350 or less. I know that seems like a lot but he’s been higher than that.”

On discussion of Jordan Davis as a Heisman Trophy candidate…
“I think it’s unfortunate that defensive players don’t get mentioned for it. I’m not necessarily advocating Jordan. I’m advocating defensive players because I feel like the NFL values that and if you look over time, outside of the quarterback position, which they have to draft and they get drafted every year, four to five guys on average at quarterback, outside of that you have defensive players taking the top 10 every year because they can change the game when there’s pass rush or corner or somebody locking someone down or whatever the position may be, but it is what it is and it’s an award that has become quarterback, receiver, running back heavy and an ultimate respect for the for the award, but certainly some defensive players across the country deserve some kind of recognition. It’s almost like you wish you could take one every year to New York as a defensive player because it’s such a great event.”

UGA Football: No. 1 Georgia Previews Florida

University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart and select Bulldog student-athletes offered the following comments on Monday.

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs will face Florida on Saturday for a 3:30p.m. ET kickoff against the Gators at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida.

Head Coach Kirby Smart
Opening Statement…
“…Game plan, prep, try to get ahead. Today we will kind of do the same continuation. Players were off this weekend. It was good for them to get a break. I know most of them came back excited yesterday. We’re looking forward to an opportunity to play in what I think is one of the best games in all of college football, in terms of the pageantry, the 50/50 stand, the neutral site. It’s a really cool atmosphere that we get to play in, in Jacksonville, Fla. Looking forward to (playing) a really good football team.”

On who will play QB…
“It’s going to be based on practice. No decision has been made, whatsoever. He (JT Daniels) did practice Wednesday and did pretty good, and he practiced Thursday and did well, in terms of not having pain before, during, or after. That’s what we’re looking for. Is it bothering you today? No. Can you throw today? Yes. Did you throw today? Yes. How does it feel after? No pain. Again, we will continue down that same path today, and see how he feels. The good thing is he was able to get a good Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (off)… Really almost four days if you count from the last practice to this practice, all of the players have… In terms of that, it will be based on how practice goes. No determination has been made, nor will it be made. It’s based on performance on the field. It’s just like our guys that came back from ankle injuries. They were back. Everybody was asking about Darnell (Washington). Darnell was back and he was 100 percent of what he could be 100 percent, but he wasn’t really ready to play yet. I think it all depends on where JT (Daniels) is and where Stetson (Bennett) is, and who gives us the best chance to win. Stetson has done a good job since he’s been playing and JT has done a good job when he’s played. The good thing is we feel like we have really three-four good quarterbacks who are ready to play.”

UGA Football: Cine Named Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Semifinalist

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia junior safety Lewis Cine has been named one of 12 semifinalists for the 2021 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award given to the best defensive back in college football, according to an announcement by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

Cine, a native of Cedar Hill, Texas, is one of two semifinalists from the Southeastern Conference.  Three finalists will be announced on Nov. 23.

Junior Tykee Smith was a 2020 semifinalist with West Virginia before joining the Bulldogs in the offseason.  The Bulldogs’ last finalist was J.R. Reed in 2019 and the Georgia’s only winner of the award was Deandre Baker in 2018.

Cine has started all seven games for the undefeated Bulldogs and is third on the team with 28 tackles, including a tackle for loss.  He also has one interception this year and has helped Georgia boast the nation’s No. 2 pass defense, giving up just 144.9 yards per game.  Cine is on the backend of a defensive unit that is leading the country in scoring defense (6.6 points/game) and that has only allowed three opponents to reach double figures.

No. 1 Georgia (7-0, 4-0 SEC) travels to Jacksonville, Fla., for the annual showdown with Florida (4-3, 2-3) on Saturday.  CBS will televise the game at 3:30 p.m.

UGA Football: Frierson Chats With Dan Jackson

Dan Jackson is having a moment. Playing for the No. 1-ranked Georgia football team, the walk-on isn’t just getting on the field here and there. And the Bulldogs’ fans have noticed.

A 6-foot-1 and 190-pound redshirt sophomore defensive back from Gainesville, Ga., Jackson led the Bulldogs with six tackles in last week’s win at Auburn, and on special teams in the shutout of Arkansas two weeks ago, he blocked a punt that was recovered for a touchdown. Heading into Saturday’s big game against No. 11 Kentucky, Jackson has 13 tackles, nine of them solo.

William Mote, Georgia’s long snapper on punts, is very good friends with Jackson, Both came in as walk-ons and earned their places on the team and on the field. During a recent Quick Chat, Mote brought up Jackson often, saying that he’s one of those guys that’s seemingly good at everything he does.

During a Quick Chat after practice Tuesday, Jackson talked about making plays, chasing dreams, playing the guitar, the importance of having confidence in yourself, and much more. Here’s some of what he had to say:

Auburn failed to score on its next six drives of the first half as they ended with an INT, four punts and turned it over on downs. Redshirt sophomore Zion Logue collected his first career sack, a loss of nine while junior Travon Walker had the other sack in the first half to give him two for the year.

Georgia-Arkansas Series History

Georgia leads the all-time series with Arkansas by a 11-4 margin. The two programs last met in Fayetteville to open the shortened 2020 season with the Bulldogs knocking off the Razorbacks 37-10. Arkansas left Sanford Stadium with a 31-24 win during its last trip to Athens in 2010. The first four clashes in the series came in bowl games starting with the 1969 Sugar Bowl, a 16-2 Arkansas win. Also of note, Georgia captured the 2002 SEC Championship with a 30-3 victory over the Razorbacks in Atlanta.

This Saturday’s showdown marks the second matchup between Bulldog head coach Kirby Smart and Arkansas’ Sam Pittman, who spent the 2016-19 seasons at Georgia, the first three as the offensive line coach and the final year as Associate Head Coach in charge of the offensive line.

Pittman is just one of several Razorbacks on staff with Georgia connections. Former Bulldog special teams coach Scott Fountain is the Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator for the Razorbacks. Former Georgia assistant strength coaches Jamil Walker and Ed Ellis are on staff as Walker serves as the team’s head strength coach while Ellis is the senior associate director. Former Bulldog Fernando Velasco serves as the team’s Director of Player Development, while former Bulldog staffer Patrick Doherty is the Director of Football Operations.

Top 10 Foes In Smart Era

Georgia is 11-6 against top-10 teams under Kirby Smart, including 3-0 at home. Most recently, the Bulldogs started the 2021 season by edging then No. 3 Clemson 10-3 in Charlotte, N.C., during the Duke’s Mayo Classic. The Bulldogs ended last season with a 24-21 win over eighth-ranked and undefeated Cincinnati during the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta. Georgia’s highest-ranked win under Smart was over No. 2 Oklahoma (54-48, 2OT) in a CFP Semifinal at the 2018 Rose Bowl Game.

ESPN College GameDay Is Athens Bound

This will mark the first time ESPN College GameDay will be in Athens since coming for the showdown of No. 4 Georgia versus No. 7 Auburn in 2020. The Bulldogs left the Tigers behind in that matchup 27-6. This marked the last top-10 matchup in Athens. The production was trimmed down because of the COVID-19 regulations and was set up in Sanford Stadium’s west side plaza rather than the traditional Myer’s Quad. GameDay was also in Charlotte for the top-five matchup against Clemson. This marks the sixth time that GameDay has come to Athens.

Dominating Defense

Currently Georgia leads the nation in Scoring Defense giving up just 5.8 points per game. The defense has allowed just one touchdown this season and it came in the fourth quarter versus South Carolina with the Bulldogs leading 40-6. Georgia’s opponents have advanced to the Red Zone only four times this season resulting in three field goals and turning it over once on downs.

UGA Football: Frierson Chats With Justin Shaffer

Georgia senior offensive lineman Justin Shaffer loves green grapes. They are, in fact, a preferred pre-practice snack. At about 4 calories per grape, Shaffer would have to eat a lot of them to get much of an energy surge, but that’s kind of the point, he explained after practice Wednesday.

A 6-foot-4 and 330-pound left guard from Ellenwood, Ga., near Atlanta, Shaffer was a three-star recruit coming out of Cedar Grove High School. He arrived at Georgia in 2017 and played in eight games as a backup during that season’s run to the College Football Playoff. The next season, he played in 12 games as a reserve.

In 2019, Shaffer came in off the bench because of an injury and played a lot in the win over Notre Dame. He then made his first collegiate start against Tennessee, playing every offensive snap. He also started against South Carolina, but then missed the rest of the season with an injury.

UGA Football: Bulldogs Continue Preparation for Top Ten Matchup at Home

The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs continued preparation Wednesday Sept. 29, prior to Saturday’s Top-Ten Southeastern Conference matchup against No. 8 Arkansas. Head football coach Kirby Smart met with the media on the SEC’s weekly teleconference call while players offered comments after practice.

Head Coach Kirby Smart
Opening Statement…
“We are coming into the home game excited about Arkansas coming to play at our place. I have a lot of respect for Sam (Pittman) and his staff. They have done a tremendous job creating a new culture and energy there at Arkansas. I would expect nothing less from him. I’m very thankful for what he did with our organization before he left. It will be an exciting atmosphere. I can’t wait to see the atmosphere created Saturday. With our fan base and the early kick, it should be very interesting. I’m excited to see our guys get ready to go play in another big one.”

On Arkansas success with the deep ball…
“They run the ball well. When you run the ball successfully you create one-on-one opportunities and shots. They’ve done that well. I also think their quarterback does an unbelievable job of throwing the deep ball. That is probably the best throw that KJ (Jefferson) makes. Getting the timing on the deep ball. They have some really big wideouts that create matchup issues.”

UGA Football: Frierson Chats With Robert Beal

Robert Beal Jr. doesn’t spend that much time watching contact sports on television. Georgia’s 6-foot-4 and 255-pound outside linebacker would prefer to watch either bowling or tennis, he said during a Quick Chat this week.

A senior from Peachtree Ridge, Ga., Beal got into football, he said, because he was too physical for basketball when he was in fifth grade. It’s a transition that has worked out well for him. Beal has seven tackles, including a sack, and seven quarterback hurries through four games this season. In last Saturday’s 62-0 shutout of Vanderbilt, he had three solo stops, a 10-yard sack and two QB hurries,

During our Quick Chat, Beal talked about his start in football, not liking getting hit, his love of bowling, and much more. Here’s some of what he had to say:

Frierson: What do you remember about your start in football? We’re you really eager to play or did you kind of fall into it?
