UGA Football: Frierson Chats With Channing Tindall

Channing Tindall has an energy about him. When he walks in the room, you immediately get the sense that he’s happy to be there and happy to talk about anything and everything.

Tindall, a senior inside linebacker from Columbia, S.C., and the rest of the No. 2-ranked Georgia football team were certainly happy after last Saturday’s season-opening 10-3 win over then-No. 3 Clemson in the Duke’s Mayo Classic in Charlotte, N.C. The defense held the Tigers without a touchdown and to just 2 rushing yards. Tindall had three tackles in the win.

By Monday, of course, Georgia had turned its attention to Saturday’s home opener against UAB. During a Quick Chat after practice Tuesday, Tindall talked about moving on mentally to the next game, his mom’s cooking, attending Georgia after growing up in Gamecocks country, and much more. Here’s some of what he had to say:

Frierson: How long does the good feeling of a win over a team like Clemson stick around?

ATHENS, Ga. — Quarterback Stetson Bennett IV completed his first five passes, for 245 yards and four touchdowns, and the No. 2-ranked Georgia football team was rolling early Saturday in the Bulldogs’ 56-7 win over UAB at Sanford Stadium.

Georgia’s return to Dooley Field for the first time since Nov. 21, 2020, was about as triumphant as it could get. Saturday’s home opener was at full capacity and there was much to cheer about from the very outset.

Bennett, the redshirt senior starting for the sixth time in his career, in place of junior JT Daniels, completed a 73-yard touchdown pass on the second play from scrimmage. He hit wide-open sophomore wide receiver Jermaine Burton on the strike, setting the tone for the day. Four minutes later, after a stop by the Georgia (2-0) defense, Bennett connected with junior running back Kenny McIntosh for a 12-yard score and a 14-0 lead with 10:17 left in the first quarter.

UGA Football: Dawgs vs UAB – Post-Game Notes

Quick Summary: Second-ranked Georgia built a 35-0 halftime lead thanks to a quick-strike offense led by senior QB Stetson Bennett (10-for-12, career-high 288 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT) who tied a school record with five TD passes as the Bulldogs posted a 56-7 win. The defense blanked the Blazers, limiting them to 174 yards on 53 plays. The UAB TD came on a pick-six with 5:02 left in the contest. Through two games, Georgia’s opponents have been held to just 10 points, the lowest since 2003 when they had 10.

For the second straight week Georgia’s defense did not allow any points through the first three quarters after shutting out No. 3 Clemson in a 10-3 win in Charlotte. Today was the first time since 2019 that Georgia posted back-to-back first half shutouts, doing it against Missouri and at Auburn. Georgia would beat Missouri here 27-0 and the Tigers 21-14 on the Plains. At 35-0, Georgia posted its biggest halftime lead since a 42-7 advantage over Murray State in 2019. With Georgia up 49-0, the Blazers entered the fourth quarter with 146 yards of total offense on 46 plays.

UGA Football: Bulldogs To Honor Former Head Coach Mark Richt

ATHENS, Ga. – Former University of Georgia head football coach Mark Richt will be honored at halftime of the Bulldogs’ football game versus Missouri on Nov. 6, J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Josh Brooks announced on Thursday.

“We are so appreciative of all of Coach Richt’s contributions to the University of Georgia,” Brooks said. “His impact on Georgia football, the Athletic Association and the Athens community is immeasurable. We are thrilled we are able to honor him at Sanford Stadium this season.”

Richt’s 145-51 overall record in 15 seasons at UGA ranks him 10th on the all-time winningest SEC coach list. The Bulldogs had an 85-40 SEC record during his tenure and made five appearances in SEC Championship Games, winning twice in 2002 and 2005. Richt, a two-time SEC Coach of the Year honoree, led Georgia to nine bowl game wins, with Sugar Bowl victories in 2002 and 2007.

During Richt’s tenure leading the Bulldogs, his teams produced 84 NFL Draft picks (2002-16), including 13 taken in the first round, had 17 All-Americans and finished with 106 All-SEC selections.

“Katharyn and I are excited about being honored on Nov. 6 in Sanford Stadium,” Richt said. “Athens and the University of Georgia have been very special to us and we are humbled to be a part of the great history and tradition of the football program. We also would like to thank the people of Georgia for the love and support we felt throughout our time in Athens.”

Network coverage and the game time for the Georgia-Missouri game have yet to be announced.

UGA Football: Coach Smart and Players Recap Clemson, Preview UAB

ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart and select players offered the following comments during Monday’s press conference. The Bulldogs will open up the 2021 home season on Saturday against UAB at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Opening Statement…
“I was really proud of our players and the way they competed. We talked about composure and attention to detail, I thought we kicked butt in the composure department. We lost the attention to detail battle because we lost a couple of things. A big piece of communication for our guys moving forward is discipline. We talked about it today whether it is a noun or a verb, some of our players see it as what they do when they’re in trouble, others see it as doing what they’re supposed to do when they do it. We didn’t do that at a high enough level, we had a lot of bad disciplined eyes, decisions, blocks, really all over. You’d think it was just offense, that wasn’t the case. We had a lot of busts that we didn’t see that happened during the game. Defensively, that could have cost us or haunted us if we would have been exposed on it. Moving forward, we’re really concerned about that. Today is about UAB, we’ve got a lot of respect for their program. I was over there for years right by them, Bill Clark is a great coach and a close friend. He coached high school football and I recruited his school for a long time. He got into college coaching and has been very successful. They’ve done a tremendous job coaching and recruiting talent and winning football games. They’ve got a really good team, if you watch them on tape you’ll see it. When teams block punts and are good on special teams, you know they’re well coached. Our guys are really excited because it’s at home and it’ll be the first time we have a home atmosphere like we expect. So I’m looking forward to get ready for these guys.”

On Tate Ratledge and filling the guard position…
“We’ve had the luxury of having some depth. That’s one of our deepest positions on the team in terms of sheer scholarship numbers. Not necessarily talent, but sheer scholarship numbers we can use to move around. It’s very unfortunate for Tate, he’s done everything we’ve asked and he’s such a competitor. It’s going to be a tough four-to-five months for him, he’s going to work through it. Injuries happen in our game, it’s not the same injury as Darnell (Washington) or Tykee (Smith), but it’s still a tough injury. I’m hoping he gets back by spring ball to get back to work. As far as where we go from there, we have a couple of options. Jamaree (Salyer) has played at guard, we’ve got Owen CondonWarren Ericson stepped in and did a tremendous job. Xavier Truss got up to play guard, we feel like Broderick (Jones) is at tackle ready to go and play. So we’ll have to wait and see. Jamaree took an extended amount of time and worked at guard and center while Warren was out. He did double duty tackle-center and we really wanted to do double duty tackle-guard. Now we’ll look at it if it’s Jamaree at guard, Broderick, Xavier at tackle or vice versa. We must do that, because if one guy goes down again it might be a different move. There’s no definitive answer, it’s this is what we’re looking at. We’ll look at Jamaree, Xavier both at guard-some, Warren and Owen will continue to play guard. The fear of having Warren and Sedrick in there, is they’re the two best centers. You’ve got a higher likelihood of losing one if they’re both playing, You can’t function without a center.”

UGA Football: Frierson – Defense Carries Bulldogs To Tough Win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Time after time Saturday night, big third down after big third down, the Georgia defense was getting into the backfield and disrupting or sacking Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei.

“Do we have an elite pass rush? I don’t know that yet. Can we affect the quarterbacks? Absolutely,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said after the fifth-ranked Bulldogs produced 7 sacks and 8 tackles for loss in a 10-3 win over No. 2 Clemson in the Duke’s Mayo Classic.

It was just one game, Smart said postgame, and you can only learn so much from one game. But what a game, what a performance.
