IOWA CITY, Ia. – The No. 10 seeded University of Georgia women’s basketball team defeated the No. 7 seeded Florida State Seminoles, 66-54, in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday afternoon.
Friday’s win marks Georgia’s first victory against a Power Five opponent since 2013, when Andy Landers led the Lady Bulldogs to a win against Stanford. That was also the team’s last Sweet 16 appearance.
The Lady Bulldogs will face the winner of No. 2 seeded Iowa and No. 15 seeded Southeastern Louisiana on March 19 in the second round with the time to be announced.
Fifth-year Diamond Battles led Georgia (22-11) in scoring with 21 points. Senior Javyn Nicholson worked in the paint, grabbing 13 rebounds. Senior Alisha Lewis had a team-leading five steals while fifth-year Audrey Warren contributed five assists.
Georgia and Florida State (23-10) traded baskets to open the first frame. The Seminoles used an 8-2 run to build a 18-11 lead. A triple from Battles cut Florida State’s lead to four heading into the second quarter.
Eight points from the Lady Bulldogs gave Georgia a one-point lead, 21-20, midway through the second quarter. Using an 8-2 run of their own, the Lady Bulldogs built a 31-26 lead. A jumper from Zoesha Smith closed the first half as Georgia carried a five-point lead, 35-30, into the locker room.
Six points from the Seminoles cut Georgia’s lead to one with less than five minutes remaining in the third frame, 39-38. Four points from Smith boosted the Lady Bulldogs back to a five-point lead as Georgia held a 45-40 lead going into the final quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs ripped 12 straight points to open the fourth quarter and built a 17-point lead. Three Battles free throws and a layup from Nicholson gave Georgia its final 66-54 advantage.

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia women’s basketball team earned the No. 10 seed in the Seattle Region and will play No. 7 seed Florida State Friday in Iowa City, Ia.
Joining Georgia in the Seattle Region will be No. 2 seed Iowa and No. 15 seed Southeastern Louisiana. The winner of the two games will meet on Sunday. Game times for first round games will be released later Sunday.
Georgia owns an 8-0 series lead against Florida State. The two teams last met in the NCAA tournament in 2011.
This marks Georgia’s 36th trip to the NCAA tournament in 41 years, tying Stanford for the second most NCAA bids among all Division I programs. The Lady Bulldogs ranks fifth in NCAA tournament games played (92) and seventh in tournament wins (58).
Georgia has been to 20 Sweet 16s, 11 Elite Eights and five Final Fours. The Lady Bulldogs are looking for their first Sweet 16 since 2013.
This year’s Georgia squad has won eight of its final 11 games entering the NCAA tournament, with the lone losses coming to No. 1 South Carolina and No. 3 LSU. Led by All-SEC and All-Defensive Team member Diamond Battles, Georgia finished tied for fifth in the final SEC standings after being ninth in the preseason poll.
Head coach Katie Abrahmson-Henderson’s teams have now made 12 NCAA tournaments in her 18 seasons as head coach. Her squads have now made 10-straight postseason appearances.
ATHENS – A 17-point third quarter to clinch the lead powered a 52-44 win for the University of Georgia women’s basketball team over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks Sunday afternoon in front of 2,179 spectators at Stegeman Coliseum.
This is the third win for first year head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson, making her 3-0 record the best start in Georgia Head Coach history.
Fifth-year guard Diamond Battles paced the offense, tallying her third double-digit performance with 19 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field and sinking eight free throws. Junior forward Zoesha Smith joined Battles in double-digit points, breaking her career record, with 12.
Fifth-year forward Brittney Smith led in rebounds with 12 boards, just shy of her career record of 14.
