UGA Women’s Basketball: Bulldogs Top Hornets 77-47

ATHENS, Ga. – Thanks to a terrific defensive performance, the University of Georgia women’s basketball team topped the Alabama State Hornets 77-47 Thursday evening before 1,778 spectators at Stegeman Coliseum.

Senior Javyn Nicholson and Fifth-year Brittney Smith led Georgia (2-0, 0-0 SEC) with a pair of double-doubles. Nicholson posted 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting, with 14 rebounds, while Smith notched 18 points on 9-for-18 shooting and 10 boards. Fifth-year’s Diamond Battles and Malury Bates rounded out Bulldogs scorers in double figures – Battles tallied 15 points and Bates with 13. For the game, the Bulldogs shot 42 percent from the field while holding the Hornets to just 35.2 percent shooting.

“We really challenged our post players in the last two days,” said Georgia head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson following the game. “They should be getting doubles-doubles. They are really good. (Jordan Issacs) wasn’t here, she had the flu, so those three (Malury BatesJavyn Nicholson and Brittney Smith) had to stay in the game… We knew they(Alabama State) were going to be undersized, so we worked on the high-low game, obviously, it worked. We’ve been talking to them about crashing the boards and getting offensive rebounds.”

UGA Women’s Basketball: Staiti Sweeps SEC and National Honors

ATHENS, Ga. — Jenna Staiti, who has scored in double figures in four-straight games and in 42 of the last 49 contests overall, has been named the ESPN National Player of the Week and the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.

Steady Staiti has been sensational in her final season in Athens. She has led No. 12-ranked Georgia to an 11-1 record, averaging nearly a double-double of 14.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

Last week, the Cumming, Ga., had dominant performance against one of the nation’s best players when she scored 21 points to go with 11 rebounds against No. 2-ranked NC State. Going against 2021 All-American and Preseason ACC Player of the Year Elissa Cunane, Staiti hit close to 60 percent from the field, nailed three 3-pointers and tied a season-high with six blocks. She played almost the entire way and helped Georgia to its first true road win against a top-2 team in program history.

Staiti followed that performance with 16 points against St. Francis and 17 versus South Alabama. She has hit 15-of-17 (88 percent) from the field over the last two games.

This is the latest honor of Staiti’s distinguished career. She was a 2021 All-SEC selection, made the SEC All-Tournament Team and was a 2021 WBCA All-America honorable mention honoree. Entering this year, Staiti landed on the Lisa Leslie Award Watch List for the nation’s best center and the Naismith National Player of the Year Watch List.

The Lady Bulldogs are off the rest of this week to celebrate the Christmas holiday. Georgia returns home to host No. 21-ranked LSU on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. ET.

ATHENS, Ga. — Double-digit efforts from Jenna Staiti and Reigan Richardson and a stout defensive effort helped the No. 14-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball team to dominant win over Saint Francis this afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum, 82-45.

Staiti and Richardson led all scorers this afternoon with 16 and 13, respectively. Georgia shot 53 percent from the field and totaled 28 assists on 34 made field goals.

The Lady Bulldogs improve to 10-1 this season and are now 2-0 all-time versus Saint Francis.

“We have to continue to move our feet and do things we are supposed to do,” shared head coach Joni Taylor. “It’s an effort thing. Rebounding on both ends of the basketball is an effort thing. If you look at us at NC State, I thought we went and got offensive rebounds and kept them from getting to the board as much as we could. And then you look at today, and it’s not the same. That’s my conversation with them all the time – how consistent can we be?”
