UGA Football: Jordan Davis Named Nagurski Trophy Finalist

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia senior lineman Jordan Davis has been named one of three finalists for the 2021 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given annually to the nation’s top defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

Davis, a native of Charlotte, N.C., joins Alabama linebacker Will Anderson Jr., and Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux as the finalists. They represent the top three teams in the current College Football Playoff rankings.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet will be held on Dec. 6 at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Davis has helped top-ranked Georgia (10-0, 8-0 SEC) lead the nation in scoring defense (7.6 points per game), rank second nationally in rushing defense (78.2 yards per game) and total defense (247.0 ypg). He anchors the interior line with 23 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Opponents have scored just 76 points on the Bulldogs, and no team has registered more than 17 points.

Former Bulldog and Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive back Champ Bailey has been Georgia’s only winner of the Nagurski Trophy in 1998.  Counting Davis, Georgia has had a finalist in three of the last five seasons, joining safety J.R. Reed in 2019 and linebacker Roquan Smith in 2017. Also, linebacker Justin Houston (2010) and lineman David Pollack (2002 & 2004) were finalists.

Also, Davis is a semifinalist for the 2021 Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and among the semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is given to the outstanding defensive player of the year. He is a finalist for the Senior CLASS (Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School) Award. UGA Football: Coach Smart, Bulldogs Prepare for Buccaneers

ATHENS, Ga. — University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart, along with a pair of players previewed Saturday’s home matchup against Charleston Southern. The Bulldogs and the Buccaneers kick off at 12 p.m. ET in Athens, Ga.

“We’re going to have somewhere between 28 and 30, it’s gotten narrowed down to about that point in terms of guys who decided if they are going to walk or not. Yes, Stetson (Bennett) will be one of them. I think out of them there are about 16-17 that have remaining eligibility and are considering that eligibility. It wouldn’t be the first year of doing it had we not had the cancelation last year. Last year, we had it all set up for Devonte (Wyatt) and (Justin) Shaffer. A lot of those guys were walking last year, they came back and played and have been a major part of our success.”

  • Georgia welcomes the Mercer Bears to Stegeman Coliseum for a Thursday matchup at 7 p.m. ET. Matt Stewart and Mark Slonaker have the call on SEC Network +, while Jeff Dantzler will voice the action on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.
  • The Lady Bulldogs are 2-0 and have won 10 of their last 13 games dating back to last year. It marks the sixth-straight year Georgia has started a season with two consecutive wins.
  • Sophomore guard Sarah Ashlee Barker scored a career-high 19 points to lead Georgia past Furman Monday night. Barker hit 62 percent (8-of-13) from the floor in the win.
  • The Lady Bulldogs committed just nine turnovers on Monday. That is Georgia’s lowest turnover number since committing eight in last year’s SEC tournament win against Kentucky.
  • Freshmen Jillian Hollingshead and Reigan Richardson combined to score 14 points Monday night. Hollingshead has scored 16 points and totaled 10 boards through her first two collegiate games.
  • Graduate center Jenna Staiti blocked five shots during the win against Furman. The SEC’s career active leader in blocks needs just three more swats to move into the top-5 in the Georgia career record book. She currently has 210 blocks over the past five years.
  • Graduate guard Que Morrison has scored in double figures in 14 of her last 15 games.
  • Senior Mikayla Coombs dished out a career-high seven assists on Monday. Coombs is shooting 60 percent from the field through two games this season and is hitting 46 percent of her shots during her time at Georgia. That is a huge improvement from her first two years at UConn, where she hit 27.9 percent of her shots.
  • Mercer head coach Susie Gardner will return to her alma mater on Thursday. Gardner played at Georgia from 1983-86 and was part of the 1983 and 1985 NCAA Final Four teams.
Series History

Georgia has won 25-straight games against Mercer and leads the all-time series, 27-12. The two teams first met in 1974, with the Bears winning the first five matchups in the series. Georgia is 16-5 at home all-time against Mercer and has not lost to the Bears at Stegeman Coliseum since 1979.
