How Are the Dawgs Doing Overall in Sports?

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL is off to a smoking hot start! They’re ranked #3 in the nation and have already beaten 4-5 top 25 teams. That includes beating #8 Clemson yesterday by a score of 2-1. The Lady Dawgs are 13-1 on the season.

BASEBALL is also off to a great start, but with an easier schedule. Wes Johnson tied a UGA baseball record by winning his first 8 games of the season as a new head coach. The Dawgs beat the likes of Kennesaw State, UNC Asheville, Georgia State, Northern Kentucky, and Presbyterian………..scoring almost 13 runs a game. Charlie Condon might be the best player in the nation. He was named player of the week last week and likely will again for this week. He has 7 homeruns on the season already, including three in the Dawgs first loss againt Michigan State. It was a midweek loss where a lot of new players and freshmen got to play for the first time.

WOMEN’S EQUESTRIAN might be one of the most highly contested sports in college athletics. The Lady Dawgs just won three top five matchups in a row against Auburn, Texas A&M, and South Carolina. They were able to avenge losses to the Tigers and Aggies from earlier in the season. They have one more matchup against South Dakota State, then the SEC Championship is March 29.

If we really have to talk about BASKETBALL, I guess we will. The men’s team can’t buy a decent win. They’re 1-8 since January 27th, with the lone victory being over lowly Vanderbilt. These Dawgs (15-13) just can’t finish out games. They had Tennesse beat earlier in January, only to see a scoring drought at the end of the game. They played a tough game against Kentucky and gave Florida hell in both of their games against them. They lost to Alabama by less than 10. They lost two road games againt Miss St and Arkansas that they could have easily won, then got blown out against Auburn. If I’m being honest, I think they got screwed Tuesday against LSU. The Dawgs had a chance to win it twice at the end, but no foul was called on the last second shot from Silas Demery.

The women’s team isn’t doing much better. They’re 13-15 on the season, but have looked sort of a little better team as of late. The Lady Dawgs are 2-5 in February, with victories over Kentucky and Florida. They pushed #1 South Carolina hard and actually had a 7 point lead at halftime. On the other hand they got blown out by Tennessee, Miss St, and Ole Miss.

The WOMEN’S TENNIS team has started the season off at 5-3 with a nasty schedule. They lost top 10 matchups to #4 UNC (0-7), #6 Texas (3-4), and #9 Ohio State (3-4). They have SEC victories against Florida, South Carolina, and Texas A&M. The #11 Lady Dawgs also beat rival Georgia Tech 4-1. This is their first season under new head coach Drake Berstein, after Jeff Wallace retired after 38 years. Bernstein was Wallace’s associate head coach.

The MEN’S TENNIS team isn’t quite holding up to the lofty expectations set by 36 years under Manny Diaz. The Dawgs have been a powerhouse in the past, but are 4-4 this year and ranked #43 in the nation. Like the women’s team, the losses are all against top 25 teams…………..#18 Texas A&M (2-4), #6 Virginia (0-4), #25 UNC (1-6), #3 Wake Forest (2-5). These are just normally matchups that the Dawgs win. Manny Diaz recently announced that he will retire after this season. Seven year associate head coach Jamie Hunt will take over the program. Hunt helped lead UGA to two national championships, pleying for Diaz from 2007-2010.

The SEC SWIMMING and DIVING championships just concluded. The men finished 3rd and the women finished fifth.

The Dawgs just finished the SEC Indoor Championships in TRACK AND FIELD. The women’s team finished 6th, while the men’s team finished 7th. Christopher Morales Williams set the world indoor record for the 400-meter dash.
